Chapter Sixteen
They filmed three scenes in the hallway before doing the stunt, all of them talking scenes between Simone, Templeton, and a representative from the Department of Defense. In the second scene, it was just Simone and Templeton debating which of them truly had jurisdiction over Trujillo. While they filmed, Kim went to wardrobe and makeup and transformed into Simone herself. The hairdresser had to adjust Kimâs hair, since Marisa was wearing it slightly different for this episode.
When she returned to the set, she found Break and he helped her suit up in her harness. Simone was dressed in a white blouse and a gray blazer. The harness went over the shirt, and the wire was attached to the middle of her chest. She had elbow and knee pads, both of which were thin enough to be hidden by the jacket and her slacks.
Kim tested the catches and made sure everything was secure. âOkay, think you can handle it?â
âI donât know. You weigh a lot more than the last time I did this.â
Kim swung at him, but Break easily ducked it.
âEveryone ready?â Solomon asked.
Kim led Break onto the set. The wire threaded through a pulley, one end at the junction of the two corridors, the other draped over the top of a ladder. The floor was covered by several thick mats, giving Kim a safe place to land. Solomon said, âOkay, letâs run through this a couple of times.â
Kim took her position, and Break hooked up the wire. She leaned back, pulling the wire taut and tugging on the catch to make sure it stayed in place. Break went to the ladder, climbed up four steps, and wrapped his hands around the wire. âReady?â he asked.
âGo on your cue,â Kim said. She pressed herself against the corner of the wall, facing away from the ladder. The wire rested comfortably against her side. She raised her right arm, mimed shooting toward the escaping villain, and braced herself for the tug. âGrenade!â she said, and turned. Break leapt from the ladder and landed solidly on his feet. The wire pulled tight, and Kim went off her feet. She swung her arms, as if in freefall, and landed face first on the mat. She skidded a bit, but rolled onto her side and pushed herself up immediately.
âLooked good,â Solomon said. âLetâs go one more time.â
Kim reset, shouted the cue, and Break jumped from the ladder. This time, Kim hadnât quite turned all the way around when the wire yanked her off her feet. She flew almost sideways, arms raised to protect her head, and hit the mat with her shoulder. She tumbled, ended up on her hands and knees, and took a moment to regain her bearings before she stood up.
âYou okay?â Break said.
âFine,â Kim said. âThat one actually looked a bit more natural. Letâs try it again.â She adjusted the harness and glanced toward the back of the set. Marisa was standing near one of the cameras, eyes wide and chewing her thumbnail.
